“Volunteering at SDS Rumah Kita”

I volunteer every Wednesday teaching extra-curricular drawing class to first and second grade students at SDS Rumah Kita. I’ve been teaching here for two years now. Currently, I have eleven students . I love the kids’ enthusiasm and passion for learning. I am so welcomed by everyone at school, especially my students. And I’m so lucky to be given the chance to teach freely according to what I like. Therefore, I’m open to express myself freely while also being in a more relaxed surrounding.

I teach a variation of topics for the students each week. Sometimes I prepare on my own and other times based on my students’ request.

Usually we’ve been learning landscapes, such as mountains and oceans a lot. Besides those, we also learn humans and animals. The kids predominantly love drawing mountains the most.

I’ve started teaching again recently. We’ve been learning how to draw different facial expressions. After that, the body gestures to match the faces. Those were very new to them, but they enjoyed the experience overall. Most of them know how to draw already. Only a few need extra- help. But, overall they are all very passionate.

Drawing has a lot of advantages for the kids’ learning skills.

It is beneficial for among others:

  1. Fine motor skills
  2. Creativity
  3. Hand and eye coordination
  4. Better memory
  5. Happier mood

I love teaching here, I feel so lucky to be given the opportunity. I hope I can continue to volunteer for as long as I can. Stay tuned for more!
